"THE DRAG RACER'S BIBLE"

1320The Standard 1320 eGroup was founded in early 1998 by Lee Schelin and a few friends, since then it has grown to more than 325 members. The members' ages range from 20 to over 80 years old. They represent chassis builders, hero drivers, car owners, engine builders, manufacturers, photographers, writers and fans alike. One of the intents of the group is to preserve the history of the "Drag News Years" (1955 through 1971). The common bond is a love for these early years of drag racing, when cars were unique and backyard engineering was the norm.

These CD preservations of Drag News (every page - every photo) are the culmination of a dream that all Standard 1320 members shared. We would all like to personally thank member Dennis Holding of the Frantic Four "Weekly, Rivero, Fox & Holding" AA/FD for not only funding this project but actually making it happen. In addition, a special thanks to Don Garlits and others for loaning us their extensive collection of Drag News so we could make this historical project a reality.

"These were the days before the "Cookie Cutter" race cars. We sat in behind the motor, in front of the motor, four wheel drive, three wheel dragsters. One, two, three and four motors in one car. Twin motor cars with 2 blown motors, or normally aspirated, or one of each. It was a "giant" R and D program I had found the "pot of gold" at the end of the rainbow. It was like riding the wind. And I wouldn't have traded it for anything!!! ------ You think that's not so? ----- I quit a 19 year motion picture career at its peak to race as a full time profession and I never looked back." -

TV Tommy Ivo - Burbank, CA

"There was no television coverage...the Internet didn't exist ...and the magazine coverage was months behind. If you were a die hard drag race fan in the 50's, your lifeline to the sport was Drag News! The anticipation of each week's trip to Blair's Speed Shop, to get the news, from a sport that was growing and changing so dramatically, was magical. The photos and words from those early Drag News pages burned images in my mind that will last forever." -

Steve "Big Hook" Gibbs - Pomona, CA

"Drag News was the Racer's Bible, if it wasn't printed in Drag News it was just a rumor. If you or a car made it into a column for the week or better yet, a photo, you had bragging rights for the next few weeks. I would almost wear out a copy before the next one was printed. Everyone I know that was involved in drag racing from the 50's through the 70's lived for the day they got their copy."

"JetCarBob" Smith - San Jose, CA

"Gene Long, the owner of Gene's Brake Shop located in San Bernardino, CA was kind enough to order a bunch of Drag news each week.....Couldn't hardly wait to see what they said about the flatty beating up on all the overhead cars ! I upset Lou Baney's car two weeks in a row, and he is the only owner that ever shook my hand, and said I had beat them, fair and square ! Not so, with several of the others!!" JB....(doing it the hard way)....

John Bradley A.K.A. "Mr Flathead "
Bloomington, Ca.

"My introduction to Drag News came in 1956 when I was working at C&T Automotive. There was always a pile of unsold issues on the counter so I would grab a couple of last weeks issues to take home. Later on, when I was making motor mount adapters, I'd use back issues to pack them in, in order to introduce others across the country to the paper. It really was the Drag Racer's Bible."
